River Restoration and Management, Ph.D.

The Doctoral Degree on River Restoration and Management aims the development and the application of scientific knowledge of environmental sciences, ecology, engineering and urbanism to management and restoration of the fluvial ecological quality, at different spatial scales, from the microhabitat to the river reaches and the drainage area.


The Doctoral Degree on River Restoration and Management is a joint institutional partnership that aims to gather a well reputed teaching corps with high skills in the subjects to be taught, supported by a stronghold of theoretical knowledge and application experiences. Three institutions from the Technical University of Lisbon: IST, the Faculty of Agronomy and the Faculty of Architecture, and two foreign institutions, the Univ. of California, Berkeley and the Univ. Politécnica de Madrid, agreed to join their efforts to put together this Doctoral Course.

This Ph.D. program intends to develop the scientific knowledge in the fields of restoration and management of fluvial processes and ecological quality, thus contributing to the sustainable development of human societies and the conservation of natural resources. The emphasis of the course will be on Mediterranean-type rivers.

Academic Requirements

  • The Degree is accessible to students from Portugal and abroad, with interests on Mediterranean ecosystems, wanting to improve their scientific skills (as a post-graduation Advanced Studies Diploma) or to further develop scientific work on the subject (as a PhD. Diploma).
    • Candidates with pre-Bologna five years Portuguese degrees or with MSc. degrees in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Agronomic or Forestry Engineering, Biology and Ecology, Architecture or Landscape Architecture can apply.
