Overview

The main areas of the Technological Physics Engineering PhD Program from Instituto Superior Técnico   are:

  • Plasmas Physics, Nuclear Fusion, Photonics and Intense Lasers;
  • Condensed Matter Physics, Nanotechnology and Solid State Physics;
  • Particle Physics, Nuclear Physics and Astrophysics.

The PhD Program in Technological Physics Engineering together with the PhD Program in  Physics (see the specific web page for this latter) integrate the 3rd  study cycle of higher education courses that result from the Bologna Agreement. 

They complement the basic formation in physics and in physics engineering of the 1st and 2nd  cycles of studies at IST embodied in the Integrated Master Degree in Technological Physics Engineering.

Objectives

The PhD Program in Technological Physics Engineering is designed to provide advanced knowledge and research capabilities into subjects involving physical and physical engineering applications.  

The range of applications considered is chosen to be, as wide as possible, consistent with the available expertise in the Physics Department of IST. It includes applications in advanced experimental techniques of plasmas physics, intense lasers, optics, nanotechnologies and nuclear and particle physics. 

Emphasis is also given to data acquisition systems, real time control measurements, instrumentation for plasmas and nuclear physics, and micro and nanofabrication techniques (see the curricular plan of the PhD Program).
