About the programme
As part of the internationally recognised Centre for Innovation and Research in Childhood and Youth (CIRCY), you’ll work with faculty who are global in their outlook and experts in their fields.
Across varied disciplines and substantive topics, Childhood and Youth Studies researchers at the University of Sussex seek to understand – and make a difference to – the lives of children, young people and families, and to build understandings of childhood and youth in theory, research and practice.
Programme Structure
Research:
- The PhD in Childhood and Youth Studies is linked to three Schools within the University: Education and Social Work; Law, Politics and Sociology; and Psychology.
- Depending on your specialist area of study, you will be based within one of those Schools, but you will also be part of an interdisciplinary community of doctoral researchers linked to the cross-University Centre for Innovation and Research in Childhood and Youth (CIRCY).

General requirements
- You’re normally expected to have a Masters degree and an upper second-class (2.1) undergraduate honours degree.
- Applicants with at least three years professional experience in Social Work who do not meet the stated entry requirements are encouraged to apply, although your Masters degree should be in a subject that includes research methods training.
