Sussex was the first of the new wave of UK universities founded in the 1960s, receiving its Royal Charter in 1961.
Research is at the heart of Sussex, where research centres are international leaders in their fields, and an interdisciplinary environment thrives across the university.
Sussex research has produced Nobel prizes, developed radical theories, and created important innovations. It has had extensive impact on business, government, the third sector, health and culture.

On-campus accommodation
Choose from nine campus housing options, which have either en-suite or shared bathrooms.
Experience life in the city and benefit from good transport links to the University by living off-campus in Brighton & Hove and other towns in the local area.
Students and members of staff are automatically members of the Library. We are pleased to welcome applications for membership from colleagues who work for our partners, such as SEF and Catering. To enter the Library you'll need your university ID card, which doubles as your library card for your time at the university.
Wi-fi is available throughout the campus and we have over 800 computers available, both PCs and Macs.
Some computer rooms are open 24 hours a day. You can view computer spaces online or use the SussexMobile app to find a free computer.
You can also attend IT courses and download software for free, including Microsoft Office and SPSS.
Sussex has one of the most beautiful campus locations in the UK.
Situated in rolling parkland on the edge of Brighton, the campus combines award-winning architecture with green open spaces.
The campus is surrounded by the South Downs National Park but just a few minutes away from the lively city of Brighton & Hove.
Designed by Sir Basil Spence, the buildings that make up the heart of the campus were given listed building status in 1993. Falmer House is one of only two educational buildings in the UK to be Grade I-listed in recognition of its exceptional interest.
You can become a member of Sussexsport or use our facilities on a pay-and-play basis.
We have two on-campus sports areas:
Choose from over 230 clubs, societies and sports teams, all supported by the Students’ Union.
These include dance societies, academic societies and even a ukulele society. There’s also an award-winning TV station.
You can get involved in a number of events run by the Students’ Union, including Freshers’ Week and One World Sussex, which celebrates the diversity of our campus community.
