About the programme
At St George's, University of London we have three broad objectives for our research work in the Doctor of Philosophy programme, which are:
- generating a positive social impact by improving diagnosis and treatment of disease
- preventing disease by responding to new and emerging healthcare challenges through targeted interventions
- developing our understanding of health through effective collaboration.
Programme Structure
Research projects include:
- Co-designing community-based interventions to drive improvements in catch-up vaccination in marginalised mobile populations across the life-course
- Co-designing a self-management intervention for people with primary antiphospholipid syndrome
- Defining physiomarkers of action tremors of the upper limbs with machine learning analysis and local field potentials recording
- Functional characterisation of a ryanodine receptor variant associated with familial dilated cardiomyopathy and sudden arrhythmic death to reveal a novel mechanism of inherited cardiac disease
- Methodological advances for environmental noise analysis in population health studies
- NALCN: a novel regulator of blood vessel contractility and therapeutic target for cardiovascular disease
- Quantifying and preventing the risk of sudden cardiac death in myotonic dystrophy

General requirements
- Applicants must hold, or expect to obtain, an undergraduate degree (or equivalent qualifications gained outside the UK) in a relevant area.
- Ideally, we would expect applicants to hold a 1st or 2.1 Honours undergraduate degree.
- Where applicants hold a 2.2 undergraduate degree (or equivalent), they should very clearly show their relevant prior experience and skills, and their suitability to undertake a PhD, in their application to provide a competitive comparison.
- Some projects have more specific requirements.
- An IELTS score of minimum 6.5 overall (with no section less than 6.0).
