About the programme
Research may be single-discipline or interdisciplinary, theoretical or applied. The research is led by the student but closely supervised by an experienced multi-institutional supervisory team, whose knowledge and skills are complementary to the specific project.
The supervisory team for this Politics and International Relations programme will consist of a primary supervisor at Northeastern University London, a second primary supervisor at the University of Kent and a secondary supervisor within the Northeastern Global University System.
Programme Structure
Doctoral degrees are awarded to students who have demonstrated:- the creation and interpretation of new knowledge, through original research or other advanced scholarship, of a quality to satisfy peer review, extend the forefront of the discipline, and merit publication;
- a systematic acquisition and understanding of a substantial body of knowledge which is at the forefront of an academic discipline or area of professional practice;
- the general ability to conceptualise, design and implement a project for the generation of new knowledge, applications or understanding at the forefront of the discipline, and to adjust the project design in the light of unforeseen problems;
- a detailed understanding of applicable techniques for research and advanced academic enquiry.

- The University welcomes applications from candidates who have attained upper second class honours in their undergraduate degree or an international equivalent.
- We encourage applications from candidates who have studied a wide range of subjects at undergraduate level, as we recognise the interdisciplinary nature of studying the humanities and social sciences and the insights that students of different disciplines including the natural sciences can bring.
- We also accept applications from mature students who have been out of education for a while, if they can demonstrate relevant professional experience or equivalent qualifications, together with the potential to thrive as a postgraduate student at Northeastern University London.
- Each application will be assessed on an individual basis through their application, a reference and a personal statement.
