In this Learning and Memory in the response to recurrent hypoglycaemia in diabetes project at University of Dundee , the candidate will test whether this altered response to hypoglycaemia develops through the mechanism of habituation.

Context

Recurrent hypoglycaemia has both acute and chronic consequences and is greatly feared by people with type 1 diabetes. Work from our laboratory over the last few years has revealed that the brain adaptation to recurrent hypoglycaemia in type 1 diabetes represents a specialised form of memory called habituation. Paradoxically this adaptation reduces symptom awareness of hypoglycaemia increasing the risk of severe hypoglycaemia with loss of consciousness.
