Overview

The School has a long tradition of excellent postgraduate student support. Depending on the chosen research area, students will be assigned one or two supervisors and are guaranteed full access to computing facilities (including translation memory software), library provision and all School resources including the film library.

There is a dedicated postgraduate study area within the School which students are encouraged to use as often as they can.

Completed PhD theses:

PhD dissertations in Italian Studies successfully completed in the School of Modern Languages include: (2013) Gerwyn Owen: ‘The Jew as Dangerous Other in Early Italian Cinema, 1910–1914’. Co-supervised with Prof Nathan Abrams (SCSM).

Research Areas

Our academic staff in Italian Studies can offer MPhil/PhD supervision on a wide variety of topics, a selection of which are listed below:

  • 20th- and 21st-century Italian fiction
  • Postmodernism
  • Memory and history in contemporary fiction
  • Representation of space and the image of the city in Italian fiction
  • Representations of childhood.

Co-supervision of comparative topics within the School can also be offered.

    PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English Academic) is a language test that enables students to demonstrate their writing, listening, speaking, and reading skills when applying to study in English. Delivered and marked by computer, it reports on a scale between 10 and 90.

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: Upper Second Class

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to Upper Second Class on the UK Honour scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on the UK Honour scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).
