As well as the research and skills training, Architecture programme offered by the Department of Architecture from University of Cambridge, candidates have the opportunity to attend numerous training and personal development courses.


The Department welcomes applications from graduates to undertake research towards a PhD in most areas, including Urban Studies, History and Theory of Architecture and Urbanism, Digital Media Design and Communication, Design, Technology, Planning and Environment, but is unable to accept candidates for whom no supervisor is available.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the Architecture programme from University of Cambridge, candidates will have acquired excellent skills, experience and knowledge to undertake postdoctoral work (research and teaching) or another related profession.

Programme Structure


  • Thesis / Dissertation

The thesis is examined by two examiners and includes an oral examination which is usually held at the Faculty.

  • Other

Candidates for the PhD are reviewed on a regular basis.

  • In the third term, candidates submit a First Year Report.  Candidates’ reports are assessed by two examiners and the candidates undertake an oral examination. Candidates are required to pass in order to be registered and progress into the second year.
  • During their seventh term, candidates are required to give a presentation of their work at the annual PhD Conference. 
  • In their ninth term, students have an interview with their supervisor(s) and the Director of Graduate Studies or any other appropriate assessor approved by the supervisor in order to monitor their progress and ensure that the student is on track to submit their thesis within three years.
  • Candidates submit a logbook of their research activity at the end of each year.
