The establishment of Aberystwyth University was the work of a small group of patriots, led by Hugh Owen, a London Welshman, who sought from the 1850s onwards to raise enough money by public and private subscription to establish a college of university status in Wales. In 1872, the University was opened in a half-finished hotel building on the sea front in Aberystwyth.
Aber provides a transformative education, and encourages students to become rounded individuals through making the most of their time with us. However, the Aber experience is much more than just studying. Together, our students and staff provide a real community in which students can savour the myriad of opportunities in sport and society.
Research is an integral part of Aberystwyth University's mission and work.
