In October 1887, the University of Oregon established a department of medicine in Northwest Portland. Since those first building blocks were laid down, the university has dramatically expanded both in form and function, but its core values and mission remain the same today.
As Oregon's only academic health center, Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) is responsible for educating the physicians, nurses, dentists and other healthcare professionals who will make up the majority of Oregon's healthcare providers in the future.
OHSU emphasizes patient-centered care, with students learning not only in classrooms but also at patients' bedsides, physician's offices and community settings, such as homeless shelters, juvenile detention centers, elementary schools and child care centers throughout Oregon. OHSU seeks to promote lifelong learning among students while instilling a commitment to serve the communities where they live and work.
As the state of Oregon’s only public health and research university, OHSU is a unique resource for Oregonians and the place where healing, teaching and discovery come together. We train the health care professionals that Oregon communities need. We provide care to those with the most difficult health challenges. And our faculty works every day to come up with new discoveries that help save lives.
As one of Oregon's largest employers, we provide family-wage jobs, opportunities for career growth and excellent benefits. Visit our nursing jobs page for more information and the latest opportunities.
The OHSU Student Center provides social, recreational, and cultural opportunities to students and members of the OHSU community. Through its dynamic environment, the Student Center stimulates interdisciplinary interaction and cultivates a sense of community among students, faculty, and staff, and is dedicated to conducting programs that enrich educational and work experiences.
Portland has many lodging options for visitors who come to OHSU from outside the Portland metropolitan area. OHSU has partnered with local area hotels and travel partners that are offering special rates for OHSU students, employees, and visiting guests.
The Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) Library, the largest health sciences library in Oregon, serves the faculty, staff and students of OHSU, as well as health professionals and residents of the State of Oregon.
Our mission is to provide students and postdoctoral scholars with the tools for academic success through personal health and well-being during your years at OHSU. We offer high quality, confidential primary and behavioral health care in our clinic on the main Portland campus.
Student interest groups provide extracurricular activities for students to participate in educational, intellectual, interdisciplinary as well as cultural and social events.
The All-Hill Student Council is the governing body of all OHSU students and serves as the liaison between students, faculty, and administration throughout the OHSU campus. All schools and programs are represented by electing students to serve as class delegates. Delegates serve on committees across campus, host student events throughout the year, and keep fellow students informed of important happenings that directly affect campus life.
Oregon Health & Science University is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.
