About

History

  • LJMU can trace its roots back to 1823 and the foundation of the Liverpool Mechanics’ and Apprentices’ Library; throughout our history we have championed education for all.
  • We take our name from one of the UK’s most successful businessmen, Sir John Moores, who turned his love of football into a business empire that was worth millions.

Research

Research and scholarship are at the heart of everything we do at Liverpool John Moores University. Research is central to the student experience and informs the curriculum at all levels.

The results of the 2014 Research Excellence Framework demonstrated the world-leading quality of our research – every unit of assessment we submitted was rated as at least 45% internationally excellent or better.

LJMU ranks in the top half of the overall research league table, placed 61st, out of 128 universities which submitted more than one unit of assessment, in the proportion of research that is world-leading or internationally excellent and we are second in the University Alliance group

Career

  • Work related learning is built into every course, giving students the opportunity to gain real-world experience and apply their skills in professional settings.
  • The Careers Team offers a range of career support at the campus-based Careers Zones including careers guidance, interview practice sessions and application form reviews, via one-to-one appointments. The Careers Team also offer an extensive programme of careers workshops and webinars, as well as school/programme-specific events and careers fairs. 
  • Careers Zone 24/7, LJMU’s online careers platform, features a huge range of careers tools and assessments to allow students to work on their employability skills at any time, from anywhere.

Housing services

  • The University guarantees all new students – including those who join via Clearing - a place in high quality LJMU-approved accommodation, situated in the heart of Liverpool city centre. Accommodation consists of individual study bedrooms within shared flats and most bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms. All accommodation is self-catered. Onsite staff and Residential Assistants (trained LJMU students) are there to help you settle in.
  • We also have accommodation that is wheelchair accessible and suitable for students with visual or hearing impairments. Visits can be arranged to view our accommodation and to discuss individual needs in greater detail.

Library services

  • LJMU has three libraries, with one based in each of the City, Mount Pleasant and IM Marsh campuses; two of them are open 24/7 during semesters.
  • Our libraries offer a variety of environments to suit your study needs, ranging from individual and silent study areas through to open plan zones and group spaces. There’s Wi-Fi access throughout plus computers, laptops, books, journals and online resources

Medical services

  • Students' health in their work is overseen by the Occupational Health Unit, with a screening and referral service for students in healthcare, pharmacy, social care, microbiology and teaching.
  • A Counselling and Mental wellbeing service provides free, confidential sessions for students. All contact can be made through email, telephone or by face to face drop in. 

Student Life

Campus life

  • City Campus is situated in the heart of Liverpool and close to some of the city’s most impressive attractions. Teaching buildings include the James Parsons Building and Tom Reilly Building.
  • Mount Pleasant Campus is close to the theatres, independent cafes and bars of the Georgian Quarter. Buildings include the John Lennon Art and Design Building, John Foster Building and Redmonds Building.
  • IM Marsh Campus is located four miles south of the city centre in a leafy suburb, offering a range of facilities.

Sports facilities

LJMU students are entitled to free off-peak access to Lifestyles Fitness Centres across Merseyside*, with membership covering a host of activities and facilities. 

*The University has secured a contract with Liverpool City Council’s Lifestyles Fitness Centres until August 2021.

Student clubs

From sports teams to societies, there are over 100 student groups to choose from, run by Liverpool John Moores University Students’ Union (JMSU). Joining a student group helps students to branch out, meet new people and get the most out of their time at the University.
