New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology

New Mexico Tech aspires to be a preeminent community of scholars dedicated to research, education, and innovation – advancing science, technology, engineering, and mathematics – to meet the challenges of tomorrow. We will drive innovation and education through transdisciplinary collaborations.

History

In 1889, Socorro was a mining boom town, wild, raucous, and, at a population of about 4500, one of the largest towns in New Mexico. The Territorial Legislature, wanting to boost New Mexico's economy, decided to found a School of Mines to train young mining engineers, and Socorro was the ideal location.

Education

  • New Mexico Tech serves the state and beyond through education, research, and service, focused in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Involved faculty educate a diverse student body in rigorous and collaborative programs, preparing scientists and engineers for the future.
  • Our innovative and interdisciplinary research expands the reach of humanity's knowledge and capabilities. Researchers, faculty, and students work together to solve real world problems. Our economic development and technology transfer benefit the economy of the state and create opportunities for success.

Research

  • New Mexico Tech has jokingly been called a research institution that happens to have a university. In reality, it’s not far from the truth. However, the vast majority of research projects have a strong student component.
  • Nearly all professors in every academic department maintain active research projects that involve undergraduate students. Also, more than 400 graduate students are conducting research – along with their academic advisors and committees – to finish their master’s and doctorate degrees.

Career

Career Services provides career counseling; resume, cover letter, and interviewing skills assistance; and listings of permanent, temporary, on‐campus, internship, fellowship, and research positions. Career Services is responsible for Career Fairs, the Cooperative Education program, maintaining placement records, sponsoring workshops on aspects of graduate school and job search processes, and providing assistance to employers, including scheduling information sessions and on‐campus interviews. Our mission at Career Services is to offer our diverse student population services that will enable them to be successful in finding and keeping an internship, co-op or job offer.
