The prescribed 4-year curriculum is based in the medical model, emphasizing individualized attention and clinical development. The curriculum integrates classroom experience and patient contact, providing early exposure to clinical training captured through community outreach programs, rotations through our clinics and externships in clinical sites both nationally and internationally.
Research
SFTP training includes:
- Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) Course
- Library and web-based literature search, review and analysis
- Hypothesis formulation and testing
- Study design, protocol development and informed consent
- Clinical and laboratory data acquisition
- Descriptive, inferential, comparative & predictive statistical analysis
- Graphical and tabular data quantification and presentation
- Creation of an abstract suitable for submission for peer-review
- Development of scientific posters and papers for peer-review
Career
The University of the Incarnate Word Rosenberg School of Optometry offers career service resources specifically for our optometry students and alumni. In addition to general tips on resume building, interview preparation and job searches, we offer a free online placement service to students and alumni of the Doctor of Optometry Program, via UIW’s Cardinal Careers database. Position seekers complete a brief profile and attach their resumes. This profile is then searchable by potential employers. Likewise, employers seeking optometric professionals can complete a profile posting vacancies that are searchable by our students & alumni.

Student services
UIWRSO is committed to the success of each student enrolled in the program. Students may seek academic support including individual and group tutoring, study strategy sessions offered within the first year curriculum and time management/organizational strategies. Students can meet with our Coordinator of Academic Support Services (CASS) for personal academic counseling as well as our amazing faculty who provide a welcoming environment for academic assistance.
Library services
The Brackenridge library at the UIWRSO maintains a collection of materials in various formats to support the Optometry curriculum and ongoing research by students and faculty. Academic support is also extended to the Vision Studies program at UIW and serves as the vision science resource
Medical services
The Campus Health Center provides basic health services that focus on primary prevention care, health education and counseling, emergency care, and the maintenance of health records and insurance.
Sports facilities
The most successful students are able to achieve a balance between study and extracurricular activity by maintaining a healthy lifestyle. UIWRSO encourages student involvement outside of the classroom by accessing the many resources to support overall health and wellness.
Student clubs
UIWRSO encourages participation in student organizations and clubs, as an enhancement to the educational, professional and personal growth components. Participation in these recognized student organizations provides opportunities in leadership, self-government, responsibility, special interest development and peer collaboration.
The UIW Rosenberg School of Optometry has been granted the accreditation classification of “Accredited” effective March 20, 2013 by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE) of the American Optometric Association, 243 N. Lindbergh Blvd., St. Louis, MO. 63141. The classification of “Accredited” indicates that the program generally meets the ACOE standards for accreditation. The Council finds the UIWRSO to be in full compliance with all of the ACOE standards.
