The University of South Bohemia was founded in 1991, following a long and successful tradition of educating teachers and university experts in various fields of agricultural production, theological studies and the tradition of fish farming and fisheries. Since its establishment, the University has achieved many successes and it continuously works on securing funding for further development.
USB offers high-quality studies and its students become respected professionals in fields of business and economics, nature and social sciences, agriculture, fisheries, health and education. It provides many highly-reputed disciplines in foreign languages, puts emphasis on internationalization (study programmes in English, double and joint programmes with foreign universities, cross-border studies). Students can also absolve the one year Intensive Czech Language Course for Foreigners, pass an exam and start studying Czech programmes for free. Strengthening practical skills of graduates (project teaching, students’ involvement in science and research) and modern forms of education are for USB essential.
Research excellence has always been a top priority for the University of South Bohemia and it is proud to be a major research & development centre of the region. USB is constantly improving its buildings and laboratories, which are well-equipped with the latest technology.
The University proves its high standard by passing strict criteria of prestigous international rankings such as QS or THE and its scientists publish the results of their work in the most prestigious scientific journals, such as Nature, Science and PNAS. They have also received much international recognition and awards, for example, USB is a holder of the HR Excellence Award.
The University of South Bohemia cooperates with significant representatives of different public institutions and the business sphere, thus drawing successful connections between theory learned and the practical use of knowledge, so the vast majority of the university graduates go on to find employment in their chosen field. The students are supported by several organization units, in particular, International Office, Study Offices, Science and Research Office and the ESN (Erasmus Student Network) of USB. The international office organizes an orientation week for all new international students before the beginning of each semester. The week includes important information on studies and practical things related to the arrival and the life in the Czech Republic and the University. We also offer advisory and support in issues related to visa, immigration process, insurance, medical & psychological aid and emergency & crisis situations.
The accommodation capacity at USB consists of six dormitories that offer quality accommodation at a student-friendly price. This is the most common, safest and usually cheapest option for students. The dormitories are mainly situated directly on the University campus or within a walking distance from it. Apart from the university housing, you can find various alternative accommodation providers in Ceské Budejovice. The students can accommodate in private student dormitories or rent/share a flat.
The library collection of USB is stored in two floors of a modern library building that provides more than 450 000 books and journals, tens of thousands of e-books, more than 500 study places in various study rooms, 100 PCs with internet access, Wi-Fi connection, self-returning of books 24 hours a day, copying, printing and scanning services, a cafe and a bookshop of Academia publishing.
All University students receive a user account which will give them access to the wireless network. Each international student is given a university ID card. This card gives the access to the university buildings and allows to use services at the university (canteen, printing and copying, library). Students get discounts for transport, restaurants, cinemas, museums, exhibitions and concerts.
Our International team helps the students when they have common medical problems and need advice, translation or accompaniment to the doctor/hospital. In cases of emergency or crisis situations, students may contact the 24/7 University of South Bohemia Emergency line. A general practitioner and Support Centre for students with special needs are directly in the campus too.
Our campus is modern, spacious and lively. In the USB campus, you find Rectorate, the Academic Library, four dormitories, the refectory, the student club “Kampa” and buildings of faculties. It is a brilliant place for relaxation, outdoor activities and social events. The University and its campus is located in the wonderful region of South Bohemia full of amazing natural sites. Since the campus is also not far from the city centre, students can easily enjoy the historical atmosphere of the town and its nightlife in addition to all the outdoor activities like sports or hiking. We are known for very active student life, the campus regularly hosts concerts and events for students and the general public.
USB and the town Ceské Budejovice offer access to diverse sports facilities. Directly in the campus, you find outdoor courts and playing fields. The campus lies close to a large city park and a river so its location offers a lot of possibilities for sport activities. Many sports facilities are available at the Faculty of Education situated about 15 min. walk from campus, it includes table tennis hall, fitness room, climbing wall, football field and tennis or volleyball courts. As a student, you can register for sport classes, for example, yoga, karate, climbing, swimming, tennis and volleyball.
The University has a very active Student Union (SUJU) and the international Erasmus Student Network section (ESN USB Budweis), which is a non-profit organization that brings together Czech and foreign students. International students may apply for a „Buddy “- a local student who guides them in the new environment and helps with practical problems of the stay and study. Buddies are ready to help with all arrangements before and after their arrival, as pick-up, getting accommodated, orientation in the city and campus, studies and other practicalities. Directly in the campus, you can find the student club “Kampa”, a modern building that allows students to meet and enjoy a lot of interesting events.
The University of South Bohemia has the institutional accreditation (by the National Accreditation Bureau) in the following fields of education - Biology, Ecology and Environment, Economic Fields, Philology, Philosophy, Religious studies and Theology, Historical Sciences and Social Work, Teaching, Health care Fields, Agriculture. All accredited study programmes are listed on the USB website www.jcu.cz/en.
