At Longy, we’re committed to preparing our students to meet a changing musical landscape head-on, giving them the skills to perform, the ambition to teach, and the ability to reach audiences beyond those traditionally associated with classical music.

History

Since its founding in 1915 by renowned oboist Georges Longy, Longy School of Music of Bard College has pioneered groundbreaking, rigorous music education programs through specialized training and immersive community engagement experiences with a mission to prepare musicians to make a difference in the world.

Education

Longy School of Music of Bard College trains musicians to use their artistry to make a difference in the world, providing skills and experience to making a life in music and to making music matter.

For centuries, conservatories have focused on training students to be elite performers, preparing for concert careers and orchestral positions. At Longy, we provide elite training and so much more.

While studying with some of the best musicians in the country, Longy students develop the skills needed to be a professional musician in a rapidly changing musical landscape.

Its faculty promotes profound musical understanding and technical mastery, encourages growth of imagination, and fosters an attitude of inquiry about the role of music and the musician in the larger world.

Career

Longy makes every effort to assist students with their search to find employment as working musicians. Students can also create networking opportunities through working in and around the Boston community.

The Office of Admission and Student Services provides numerous resources to connect students with prospective employers; all Boston-based opportunities are updated on the Off Campus Employment Message Board on a regular basis.
