School of Sociology and Social Policy at University of Nottingham

We are a leading UK school for sociology, criminology, social policy and social work; our courses offer students the opportunity to explore how societies work - and what can be done when they don't.

History

The School of Sociology and Social Policy is a vibrant, diverse and exciting centre for social science teaching and research, which builds on an established history dating back to 1948 and the creation of the Department of Social Administration. That year also saw the appointment of the first UK professor in this field, Professor David Marsh, who joined a team of just five other staff.

Education

The School of Sociology and Social Policy is a vibrant and diverse centre for social science teaching and research, offering a variety of single and joint honours undergraduate programmes in sociology, social policy and criminology.

Research

The School of Sociology and Social Policy delivers high-quality research across eight thematic areas. We are constantly evaluating our research themes with a view to identifying novel areas, collaborations and partnerships, to develop research that addresses the needs of an ever-changing and challenging world.

Our graduates follow a wide range of pathways, including employment in healthcare, welfare and education; administration, management, marketing and IT roles; and graduate training placements with leading organisations. Recent graduate employers include the BBC, Ministry of Justice and Stonewall.
