History
The Austrian Academy of Sciences, founded in 1847, is the leading organisation promoting non-university academic research institutions in Austria. It developed from being a mere learned society into an organisation promoting modern scientific research institutions.
Education
The Academy is currently promoting 28 research institutions with more than 1100 employees, which are located in several federal states of Austria, with the headquarters in the Old University in the center of Vienna. In the stunning 18th century frescoed festive hall of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (where Haydn and Beethoven conducted premieres of their work) CeMM holds its yearly Landsteiner Lecture.
Research
The Academy gave new impetus by taking up forward-looking research areas. Scientific quality, innovation potential and sustainability are the main criteria for its research profile. The connection between basic research and clinical research has been established by setting up CeMM, one of several Academy institutes that stand the test of international competition.
Career
At CeMM, emphasis is given to mentoring independent young investigators and scientists early in their careers, through freedom, availability of infrastructure and a strong support system. A flat hierarchy, where the input of every single person is appreciated and required, leads to an enjoyable work environment and an increase in productivity and ideas.

Student services
CeMM’s administration is dedicated to relieving the researchers from organizational burdens. In this function, it provides many services including accounting and grant management, IT services, event organization and facility and lab management.
Housing services
We also have a central purchasing office and a central store that stocks lab and office supplies. A wash and media kitchen is responsible for providing routine preparations and cleaning lab materials. A lab manager takes care of safety and the care, maintenance and replacement of lab equipment. Housing and relocation assistance is provided by the CeMM HR department.
Campus life
Embedded in the campus of the Medical University of Vienna and Vienna General Hospital, Austria’s largest medical research complex, CeMM’s position promotes a close collaboration between basic researchers and clinicians.
Vienna can look back on an excellent scientific tradition in the field of medical research. Semmelweis, Billroth, Landsteiner, Freud, Rokitansky are part of its history. It is a big privilege for CeMM to be situated on the medical campus and to build on the tradition of the Vienna Medical School, by following a highly modern post-genomic approach.
