History
We are a modern university with nearly two centuries of experience. Our story began back in 1828, when the Institution for the Diffusion of Knowledge first opened in Preston. The University of Central Lancashire was established in 1992 and since then we have expanded to create state-of-the-art campuses, and we’ve evolved to meet the demands of the modern world.
Education
The University of Central Lancashire is ranked in the top 7% of universities worldwide (Center for World University Rankings 2024).
We teach over 350 undergraduate and over 200 taught postgraduate courses as well degree apprenticeships, research degrees and CPD short courses.

In the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF), two-thirds of our submissions were recognised as world-leading or internationally excellent. This highlights our commitment to producing cutting-edge research and academic excellence.
Many of our academics are recognised as distinguished experts in their field. Our staff work collaboratively with organisations, including the United Nations, World Health Organization, European Space Agency and NASA.
Our research is leading to breakthrough discoveries which deepen our knowledge and transform lives globally – from capturing the world’s first image of a black hole, to improving maternity care in developing nations and revolutionising stroke patient care in India.

Our careers experts can provide tailored support to help you find work in the UK or overseas, even after you graduate. We can help you look for the right jobs, build your CV, write relevant applications, and prepare you interviews.
Students have access to our virtual careers library CareerEdge, and Handshake, a job search and employer networking tool. You’ll also be able to book one-to-one appointments with our careers experts or attend one of our drop-in sessions. We organise a range of job fairs on campus, where you can network with employers and learn about the employment opportunities.

University Ranking
Student services
We have excellent student support services. Dedicated teams can help with every aspect of student life across all campuses including cost of living, health and wellbeing, disability or dyslexia support. Academically you will benefit from a personal tutor and student coaches.
Students in Preston will have access to our new Student Centre which houses services including student support, careers and security combined with vast social spaces, a café and meeting rooms. Our Oasis Faith and Spirituality Centre offers a warm welcome to people of all faiths and world views with spaces for prayer, worship and reflection and support from a multi-faith chaplaincy team. We can also help with visa and immigration queries.
Housing services
Starting at only £85 per week, our halls rent is almost half the national average (CUG, 2024).
Our campuses are safe places to live, with low crime rates and security staff available 24/7 to help you. We guarantee a room in campus halls, for all new full-time students at our Preston Campus. All accommodation is a short walk away from the University and Preston city centre. If you’re studying at our Burnley or Westlakes Campuses, we also have accommodation within walking distance.
Our all-inclusive contracts mean heating, water and internet access are all included in your rent. You’ll have your own bedroom, and several rooms are adapted for students with medical conditions and additional needs.
Library services
Our Preston library is open 24/7 during term time. It contains thousands of books and journals, study areas, computers and Wi-Fi throughout. Each school has a dedicated subject librarian who help can you find specific resources for your course. We have invested in digital resources for all subjects, from art to veterinary medicine. We also have great library facilities at Burnley and Westlakes.
ICT services
Students can access computers at each campus in the libraries, dedicated IT suites and subject specific facilities. Wi-Fi is available for you to connect to the network using your own device. Our LIS Customer Services Team can be contacted by telephone, email or in person to help with any IT issues. You can also use the Equipment Hub (EHub) to loan technical equipment to support your studies.
Medical services
The University Medical Centre specialises in providing a caring and confidential service on a wide range of medical matters. We also have an on-campus Pharmacy and an Eye Clinic which offers examinations, prescriptions and spectacle dispensing from our Vision Sciences students. Our Counselling, Mental Health and Wellbeing Service is available for students who need help, support, or advice.
Campus life
We’ve recently invested £200 million in transforming our Preston Campus into a vibrant, modern learning environment. Located in the North West of England, Preston holds Purple Flag status awarded for its low crime rates, vibrant nightlife and excellent range of visitor attractions. Our city centre campus is only a short walk from shops, international supermarkets, restaurants, bars, cafés, green spaces as well as the train and bus stations.
Our Burnley Campus is constantly expanding, transforming this beautiful corner of Pennine Lancashire into a thriving university town.
Our Westlakes Campus is located near Whitehaven in Cumbria, on the edge of the picturesque Lake District National Park.
Sports facilities
The Sir Tom Finney Sports Centre in Preston is home to an eight-court sports hall, squash court, two exercise studios and a large fitness suite. We offer fitness classes including Boxercise, Pilates, Spinning and Zumba.
Our Sports Arena is located just outside the city, with an international standard athletics track, cycle track, FIFA and RFU accredited floodlit 3G pitches, all-weather sports surfaces, tennis and netball courts, and strength and conditioning facilities.
We’re a member of the BUCS Universal Gym scheme, which allows you to use the sports facilities at over 80 other universities when you’re travelling around the country. If you’re studying in Burnley or Westlakes you can access local facilities.
Student clubs
Our Students’ Union offers all sorts of activities, opportunities, and events, as well as independent advice and support. With over 100 sports clubs and societies, from American football and cheerleading to K-pop dance and mountaineering – there is something for everyone.
There are many student-led societies such as pursuing a hobby, socialising with other people on your course, exploring politics, following your faith, meeting other international students, or unleashing your creative side. We also have lots of amazing volunteering opportunities, which give you the chance to develop your skills and enhance your CV while getting involved with something you care about and giving back to the community.
