The School of Law is consistently ranked among the leading law schools in the UK and we are a world-ranked centre for legal research and teaching and have been rated as excellent in both areas.

Career

A high proportion of our graduates go on to complete legal training relevant to that of a solicitor (Legal Practice Course) or barrister (Bar Professional Training Course), whether or not they have secured a training contract or pupillage.

Those seeking careers outside of law use their degree to gain access to a wide variety of professions and organisations such as consultancies, business advisory services, marketing, civil service, public relations, accountancy and campaigning.

Student services

The school's Legal Skills Adviser helps both undergraduate and postgraduate law students with their legal skills. The aim is to ensure that every student, regardless of background or ability, has someone they can approach to discuss their legal skills.

Help available includes:

  • workshops, including how to answer problem questions and tips for effective case reading and note-taking
  • one-to-one sessions giving advice on general legal and academic skills
  • exam revision sessions, going through past exams or essays to identify strengths and weaknesses
  • advice to international students to help them adjust to studying law in a foreign language

Library services

The Hallward Library is situated adjacent to the School of Law. It provides the following for law students:

  • The Law Collection of approximately 60,000 books, law reports series, journals, microfilms and more
  • Unlimited access to extensive collections of legal materials via a wide range of electronic sources
  • A knowledgeable staff and a dedicated law librarian

ICT services

  • Undergraduate and postgraduate taught students have 24-hour access to a dedicated law student resource room
  • Postgraduate research students have 24-hour access to a private study carrel, each with its own computer and lockable desk space located in the School of Law research student computer rooms

Campus life

We are located at the centre of the University Park Campus which has many facilities including a swimming pool and large sports centre, playing fields, restaurants and coffee shops, bars, shops, and halls of residence.

The School of Law shares the large and well-equipped Law and Social Sciences building, where you will find lecture theatres, a coffee/snack bar and meeting areas.

Student clubs

  • The Law Society is very active in the School of Law, running numerous events throughout the academic year.
  • Advocate is the Law Students' Magazine, published each semester and distributed for free to staff and students in the school.
  • Pro Bono is the provision of professional work undertaken voluntarily. Recently winning Best Social Event at the National Law Society Awards, the Pro Bono Society runs a variety of projects within the local community which students are encouraged to take part in.
  • Mooting is the art of presenting a legal argument to a Judge in a mock court case; in a moot teams of students act as advocates and represent opposing parties in the case.
