They offer supervision in a wide range of topics in microbiology, ranging from medical to environmental microbiology and from biochemical and genomic analysis of single species to whole communities. 

About

They carry out internationally recognized research on Archaea, Bacteria, Eukarya and viruses. Our expertise is in microbial ecology, algal ecophysiology, extremophiles (especially halophiles), hydrocarbon biodegradation, trace-gas-production, and microbial interactions, eg viruses and bacteria with humans, bacteria with algae and protozoa. 

The Department has excellent facilities for molecular biological analysis, proteomics, transcriptomics, bioinformatics, imaging, and state-of-the-art cultivation chambers for microbes, especially microalgae and anaerobes. 

They also offer an MPhil and a Masters by dissertation in this subject.

Academic Requirements

For research study within our School of Biological Sciences, we normally require a good honours or Masters degree, or equivalent, in a relevant discipline. A well-developed research proposal is also essential.

However, if you do not have a Masters degree, we also offer a four-year integrated PhD, where your first year is spent doing a Masters before embarking on your research. This preparatory year ensures you develop your knowledge before embarking on your independent research.

If English is not your first language, then we will require you to have IELTS 6.5 (5.5 minimum component score) or equivalent.
