Sir Albert's plans were seen as so ground-breaking that he was asked to give the BBC's prestigious Reith Lectures in 1963, the year before we opened. The flagship lectures were a chance to explain how Essex was going to break the mould and challenge expectations about what a university could be.
Our three faculties oversee teaching, academic development and research in our departments and schools while developing strong partnerships with business and industry.
The dedication to offering to the students a transformational education has led to Essex being awarded the highest rating of Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF).
The UK Government introduced the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) to recognise and reward excellent learning and teaching, and ensure that prospective students can make informed choices.
