The up-to-date facilities for cell and molecular biology research include automated genetic analysers (ABI310 and ABI3100) for DNA sequencing and fingerprinting, various PCR thermocyclers, including quantitative PCR using both Taqman and Cybergreen-based methods, gel documentation systems, ultracentrifuges, computerised ELISA, optical/fluorescence plate readers and Biacore surface plasmon resonance equipment.

About

The metabolomics facilities include a new UHPLC-MS and an LC/MS/MS with a triple quadrapole detection.

The School of Biological Sciences has an international reputation for our outstanding record of teaching and research. We are a large school with friendly and supportive staff, in our 2010 National Student Satisfaction Survey we were ranked third in the UK for the subject area ‘biology and related sciences’.

Their facilities

Key to the success of all research and teaching within a university is sufficient resources. Our School of Biological Sciences is well equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, centrally resourced by technical/post-doctoral staff who provide a service to all our staff and students. Recent investment has provided modern facilities for imaging biological systems, transcriptomics, proteomics and bioinformatics.

They have a new study room for our postgraduate research students. This has been designed in collaboration with our postgraduates, and allows all our PhD students to have office space as well as a dedicated bench space in our research laboratories. This provides a focal point for our postgraduates, facilitating good communication and a strong sense of community.

Accreditation

Officially accredited and/or recognized by the Privy Council, University of Essex is a large (uniRank enrollment range: 10,000-14,999 students) coeducational higher education institution. Academic Requirements

For research study within our School of Biological Sciences, we normally require a good honours or Masters degree, or equivalent, in a relevant discipline. A well-developed research proposal is also essential.

However, if you do not have a Masters degree, we also offer a four-year integrated PhD, where your first year is spent doing a Masters before embarking on your research. This preparatory year ensures you develop your knowledge before embarking on your independent research.
