All English PhD students at Case Western Reserve University must complete English 506: Professional Communication, Theory and Practice; and English 487: Literary and Critical Theory (or another theory course).
Features
- Those who have not completed the equivalent of English 400: Composition and the Teaching of Writing in the course of MA work must complete that essential training as soon as possible. There are no distribution requirements for doctoral coursework.

- A complete School of Graduate Studies application
- Statement of Scholarly Purpose (PDF format, please) (NB: the Department does not require a separate personal statement – applicants can disregard that request on the electronic application)
- Writing Sample (PDF format, please; 15-20 pp. analytic paper). All students, including those interested in pursuing creative or public-facing writing, should submit a full and substantial scholarly writing sample. Optionally, an additional creative sample may also be submitted.
- GRE scores (report General Scores to the university using code 1105, not to the English department). (Optional)
- Transcripts from all institutions previously attended. Unofficial copies may be uploaded to online application. (Official copies are not necessary until acceptance.)
