The Mission of the English program from University of Miami is to introduce them to a range of critical and theoretical methodologies; to introduce them to a range of critical and theoretical methodologies; to provide them with the skills needed to establish their own scholarly expertise within an area of specialization; to prepare them for careers in scholarship and research within the academy.


The Department of English works to provide its students with a thorough understanding of literatures written in English;to train them for teaching in two- and four-year colleges and in research universities; where appropriate, to transfer and develop those research, communication, and presentation skills to non-academic settings; and to assist them in obtaining appropriate employment inside or outside higher education.

  • Statement of purpose.
    • Original academic transcripts (by mail, posted to the Director of Graduate Studies)
    • GRE general test scores 
    • Applicants must rank in the 65% percentile or higher in the Quantitative Reasoning test. There is no minimal score requirement for the other parts of the GRE.
    • Students from non-English speaking countries must send either TOEFL or IELTS scores.
    • Three letters of recommendation.
    • For international students: this form for financial responsibility (required by the US government)
    • Optional: For Ph.D. applications, this form to apply for an assistantship.
