Overview

The Nursing PhD program at the University at Buffalo, prepares nurse scientists to: generate new knowledge and theory; extend the evidence-base of nursing and other disciplines; and disseminate this knowledge in their roles as researchers, academics and leaders, to affect change in policy, practice, and the profession of nursing.

All doctoral classes are scheduled just two days per week, in order to accommodate the working student.

Objectives

PhD graduates will be nurse scholars who:

Develop the empirical and theoretical bases of nursing practice within a defined research program.

Utilize advanced research methodologies and technology in the pursuit of knowledge.

Demonstrate expertise in communication of research findings to the scientific and social policy communities.

Provide leadership in the development and application of knowledge to nursing research, practice and education using multidisciplinary perspectives.

Relate nursing research to the development and/or implementation of health care policy regionally, nationally and internationally.

Integrate knowledge of our multicultural society into nursing research to improve and enhance health care and reduce disparities in health outcomes.

To be eligible for graduate study at UB, we expect:

A bachelor's degree, or the equivalent, from an accredited/government recognized college or university. Most such degrees will be four or more years in length; UB recognizes some three-year degrees, but not all.
A B-grade (GPA of 3.0) or higher from your bachelor's degree (or equivalent) courses. Grade point averages from non-U.S. universities will be evaluated by UB's Office of International Admissions.
Appropriate standardized test scores (GRE, GMAT, LSAT, etc.).
Letters of recommendation.
