Overview
PhD students are eligible to receive teaching and research assistantship funding. These positions are awarded on a competitive basis and include a tuition waiver and subsidized health insurance.
Geography at University of Utah
A Masters degree is required to enter the Geography PhD program offered at University of Utah. Advisors may also expect basic proficiencies in statistics, GIS, cartography, writing, and mathematics – consult your prospective advisor to learn more about prerequisites.
Programme Structure
Ph.D. students are required to complete the following courses:- (Seminar in Geographic Thought and Inquiry), which must be taken during fall semester of the student’s first year of graduate study.
- (Advanced Geographical Data Analysis)
- Two research courses totaling 6 credits. These courses can be GEOG 6960, or from the range of courses offered as GEOG 6400-6599. Students cannot take both research courses from the same faculty member.
- One credit hour of GEOG 7930 (Teaching Practicum).
- A minimum of 5 credit hours of elective courses taken at the 6000 level or above, or at the 5000 level if a suitable course is not available at the 6000 level.
- GEOG 6000 and 6961 taken as a Master’s student in the Department of Geography at the University of Utah do not have to be retaken, but elective courses must be substituted to fulfill the 32 credit hour requirement. Elective coursework is selected with the approval of the student’s Supervisory Committee

General requirements
An applicant for admission to The Graduate School must meet the following minimum requirements:
- An undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0, based on all undergraduate work. If the undergraduate GPA is below 3.0, a GPA will be calculated on the last 60 semester hours (90 quarter hours) of the undergraduate work for admission consideration;
- Meeting the academic department’s admission standards, and receiving a recommendation for admission to their graduate program.
