Overview

The development of future composites will require doctoral students with underpinning knowledge of advanced materials science and engineering, and practical experience of the ensuing composites and structures. These highly skilled engineers not only need to understand technical subjects but should also be able to apply acquired knowledge within the context of the modern world.

This CDT produces highly skilled leaders. Core engineering modules lay the foundations and stretch your understanding of core materials, manufacturing and computational analysis, including experimental and theoretical elements of composites engineering and science. An integrated transferable skills training programme is also included, covering communication, career development and translational research skills. Collaborating with industrial partners (eg Rolls-Royce) and world-leading international expertise (eg University of Limerick), produces an exciting integrated programme enabling you to become a leader in this field.

The Advanced Composites programme is offered by University of Bristol .

Careers

Recent graduates from the programme have gone on to careers in industry (eg aerospace, automotive, civil engineering, engineering consultancy and wind energy sectors) and academia (eg research positions at UK universities).

Research groups

  • All CDT students are based in the Bristol Composites Institute (ACCIS) research group, which is within the Faculty of Engineering and has links to the Faculties of Science and Health Sciences.
  • The vision of ACCIS is to be a world-leading centre for composites research, combining cutting-edge fundamental science with strong industrial links for exploitation and technology transfer. It is a focus for collaboration - internally, nationally and internationally - and led the establishment of the UK's National Composites Centre.

English Language Requirements

  • Minimum required score:

    85

The TOEFL iBT ® measures your English-language abilities in an academic setting. The test has four sections (reading, listening, speaking, and writing), each with a score range of 0-30, for a total score range of 0-120.

  • Minimum required score:

    6.5

The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. The minimum IELTS score requirement refers to which Overall Band Score you received, which is your combined average score. Read more about IELTS.

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: Upper Second Class

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to Upper Second Class on the UK Honour scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on the UK Honour scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

General Requirements

  • An upper second-class degree in a relevant subject (or equivalent qualification).
