 Department

The School of Sociology at the University of Arizona houses a highly ranked Ph.D. program in Sociology, a B.A. in Sociology, a new B.S. in Care, Health, and Society. We maintain our commitment to being a first-rate research program in sociology.   We also offer a M.A. degree but only to graduate students who are enrolled in our Graduate Program in Sociology at University of Arizona

Programme Structure

Students combine study of the basic theories and methods of sociological inquiry with concentration in one or more of the following areas: 

  • culture; 
  • economic sociology; 
  • environment; 
  • health and medicine;
  •  law and society; 
  • organizations; 
  • political sociology (collective action and social movements, political institutions, world systems); 
  • social inequalities (gender, race and ethnicity, and stratification), 
  • social networks

Other requirements

General requirements

The Graduate College requires doctoral students to complete coursework for both a “major” field and a “minor” field before advancement to candidacy for the doctoral degree (the major and minor field can be the same). All doctoral students admitted to the Ph.D. program will major in Sociology. Most will also minor in Sociology, but they can opt to minor in another department at the University of Arizona.

  • The major in Sociology requires 45 units of course credit.
  • The minor in Sociology requires 12 units of course credit. Requirements for minors in other fields are set by the department offering the field.

All units of required course credit for both the major and the minor must be completed before advancement to candidacy for the doctoral degree. You must also complete 18 units of dissertation credit (SOC 920).
