Education
The Music - Composition program at Louisiana State University is awarded to candidates who complete the degree program with distinction demonstrating creativity, craft, collaboration and excellence in teaching and scholarship while finding their place as 21st century artists in both professional and academic situations. Graduates are prepared to teach composition at a college-university level.
The degree requires 78 acceptable hours of graduate credit beyond the bachelor’s degree (48 hours beyond the master’s degree in music.)
Studying Composition or Experimental Music & Digital Media (EMDM) at LSU means engaging with renowned faculty mentors who focus on nurturing creation across the spectrum of music making.
Students have opportunities to hear their music performed by a wide range of LSU ensembles and media, and even participate themselves in the top-flight Constantinides New Music Ensemble and the Laptop Orchestra of Louisiana. The Composers Forum offers a lively venue for thoughtful discussion, concerts, and guest lectures. Students explore digital technologies and new media through courses in the EMDM program as well as LSU’s Digital Media Arts & Engineering minor degree.

General requirements
- A conferred baccalaureate (or equivalent) from a regionally accredited college or university by the expected date of entry into the graduate program.
- The Pinkie Gordan Lane Graduate School requires a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 GPA scale or in the last 60 credit hours in the previous undergraduate or graduate coursework.
- All applicants must submit transcripts from all post-secondary colleges or universities.
- A curriculum vitae (CV) or resume with a complete and accurate chronological outline of all previous college-level education is required.
- Applicants may upload application materials to the Slate Application Portal.
