Overview
Education
The Health Sciences - Health Services and Outcomes Research program at Northwestern University builds upon existing master's degree programs in these fields and incorporates new areas of strength in measurement and health behavior. Integration across these programs provides the flexibility for doctoral students to receive rigorous interdisciplinary training in the core content needed for population and health research in the 21st century.
The goal of the HSOR track is to develop research scientists for academia, government, and private-sector research and health care organizations who can create knowledge to improve the accessibility, quality, and cost-effectiveness of health services. Specifically, we prepare students to:
- conduct methodologically sound research aimed at improving the healthcare system.
- disseminate new knowledge through manuscripts, presentations, and other products that reach policy, provider, and research audiences.
The program emphasizes practical, hands-on experiences in which students leverage course-based and faculty-led projects to advance their own emerging research interests. The result is that graduates are equipped to pose and answer important questions about health services, drawing upon a diverse array of theoretical and methodological approaches
