The Department of Materials Science and Engineering offers the opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research in the fields of metals and alloys, polymers and composites, biomaterials and healthcare materials and devices, ceramics and glass, and nanomaterials for a wide array of applications.
The Materials Engineering program is a joint program between The University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Materials Science and Engineering and the University of Alabama Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering.

Other requirements
General requirements
- The program includes separate Ph.D. tracks for students entering with baccalaureate degrees and for students entering with master’s degrees in materials or metallurgical engineering (or a similarly named program).
- Students whose degrees are in other engineering fields or in the physical sciences may also be accepted, provided they demonstrate competence in fields of study that emphasize the interrelationships among structure, processing, performance, and properties of materials.
