Overview
At the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), the primary focus of the interdisciplinary Indo-European Studies program is the study of the ancient Indo-European languages and of their reconstructed ancestor, Proto-Indo-European, based on methods drawn from comparative-historical, theoretical, and computational linguistics.

- Goals of this study include the reconstruction of the Proto-Indo-European language, elucidating its subsequent development into the historical Indo-European languages, and showing how data from the archaic Indo-European languages contribute to a theory of language.

- In addition to the University's minimum requirements and those listed above, all applicants are expected to submit a writing sample, normally consisting of a recent term paper (preferably on a linguistic topic) and a statement of purpose
- Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree with a major in an Indo-European language field (for example, German, Slavic, Celtic, Romance languages, Latin, Greek), linguistics (with concentration in historical and comparative linguistics), or anthropology (especially linguistic anthropology).
