Learning outcomes
Before completion of the East Asian Languages and Civilizations degree at the University of Pennsylvania, each student is required to:
- master the requisite linguistic tools and research methods
- demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of the history and culture of their area of expertise
- gain an in-depth expertise in one or more periods and/or subject areas
- attain the necessary level of training in their humanistic discipline.

General requirements
It is expected, however, that the applicant will have at least majored as an undergraduate in the field for which they are applying and so would have had a minimum of six semesters of their primary East Asian language as well as some literature, history, or religion courses.
Some background in a second East Asian language is preferred.
