Overview
Beginning as one of the first programs in the United States to offer doctoral study in History, the Department of History at the University of Pennsylvania continues to pioneer new areas of scholarship.
Outcomes
The majority of our Ph.D. graduates have secured tenure-track positions at research universities and liberal arts colleges throughout the United States and the world. Other graduates have made distinguished careers at government agencies, research institutions, libraries, and museums.
Over the decades, our alumni have made important contributions to the historical understanding of gender, class, race, and ethnicity; the history of economic and demographic transitions; intellectual and cultural studies; the social bases of political action; community formation and structure; cultural conflict and accommodation; and urban studies—among other things.
