About the program
The Graduate Program in Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Pennsylvania offers a rigorous professional formation in academic research, writing, and pedagogy.
Students may complement their areas of specialization with course work in a second language or in other disciplines such as Comparative Literature, English, History, and Philosophy.
Interdisciplinary study is also invited through participation in the many lectures and colloquia sponsored by the various Graduate Groups and affiliated research institutes and centers at Penn.
All graduate students have the opportunity to teach undergraduate courses in Spanish language and Hispanic culture, for which they attend extensive teacher training seminars and workshops.

General requirements
Candidates for admissions to the Ph.D. program should have fluency in Spanish as well as an excellent undergraduate record, strong letters of recommendation, and demonstrated skill in academic writing.

- Three letters of recommendation
- A personal statement (1-2 pages in length)
- A writing sample in Spanish (10-15 pages)
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores

Most of our PhD programs are fully funded, meaning the program will pay for your tuition and fees, as well as provide you with a minimum stipend of $39,425.
