Features
- The Department of Communication at University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign offers a broad curriculum in communication research. In consultation with an advisor, students assemble individualized programs, concentrating in organizational and group communication, interpersonal and family communication, health communication, communication technology, political communication, rhetoric and public discourse, communication in cultural contexts, or mediated communication. Interdisciplinary programs are also encouraged.
Programme Structure
Curriculum:
- The department trains persons for research and teaching within most of the major domains of the study of human communication, as discussed above, but there are no fixed 'tracks' to constrain a student's definition of a field of interest.
- Each Ph.D. candidate plans an individual program of study and research with the help of an adviser and a program planning committee.

General requirements
- An application must include official transcripts from every post-secondary institution the applicant has attended; at least three letters of recommendation, preferably from academic recommenders; a major paper or essay as a sample of academic writing; an academic statement of purpose that details their scholarly accomplishments and goals, and a personal statement of purpose that describes how the student's personal background and experiences influenced their decision to pursue a graduate degree.
- Students whose native language is not English must present their official scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) examination as part of their applications. The department follows the Graduate College’s recommendations for English proficiency.
