General requirements
- Your Letter of Intent has two parts: Part A, Letter of Intent; and Part B, Teaching Assistantship Letter, if you are applying for a teaching assistantship.
- A Writing Sample must also accompany your application. PhD applicants should submit a 20-page research paper that demonstrates analytical strengths and critical writing skills.
- Applicants for the PhD program must hold a Master's degree in English, or, in exceptional circumstances as approved by the Graduate Admissions Committee, in a cognate discipline such as Comparative Languages and Literature, Cultural Studies, American Studies, or Linguistics.
- A minimum of three Letters of Recommendation are required.
