The start of the 5-year degree of Aerospace Engineering in Instituto Superior Técnico in 1992, was supported by the creation of the Aerospace Mechanics Section (SMA) within the department of Mechanical Engineering (DEM), whose core activities are teaching and research in aeronautical and space science and technology.

Overview

The aim of the Doctoral Programme in Aerospace Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico is the training and qualification of researchers in this area, able to perform original research to comply with world class scientific standards and meet relevant industrial and societal needs.

The doctoral student in Aerospace Engineering gains deep and advanced knowledge in this area, supported by lecture courses, and demonstrated in an innovative thesis which must advance the state-of-the-art in its subject matter.

The lecture courses supporting the doctoral degree are mostly theoretical and based on individual autonomous study, as a background to the doctoral thesis, which must be a significant original contribution of the author as individual to the subject of study.

Employment

The Doctor's Degree in Aerospace Engineering qualifies for teaching and research activities, e.g. in institutions of higher education, research laboratories and industry.
