The Architecture programme from Instituto Superior Técnico is focused on:
The main goal of the Doctoral Degree in Architecture is to implement the concept of a project-oriented doctorate, supported in integrated research, i.e. from the theoretic to the practical level.
The processes of intervention in the built space are examined at both the urban and the building scale according to their environmental social, cultural and economic practicability.
The doctoral student in Architecture gains deep and advanced knowledge in this area, supported by lecture courses, and demonstrated in an innovative thesis which must advance the state-of-the-art in its subject matter.
The lecture courses supporting the doctoral degree are mostly based on individual autonomous study, as a background to the doctoral thesis, which must be an significant original contribution of the author as individual to the subject of study.
The Doctor's Degree in Architecture qualifies for teaching and research activities, (e.g. in institutions of higher education, research laboratories) as well as for architectural and urban design practice.
It is intended that the holder of the Doctoral Degree in Architecture shall be able to continue to develop, deepen and apply the knowledge arising from research work, thus becoming a valuable contributor to the work of the institution, which provides her/his employment.
