Overview

Doctoral students in our program investigate fundamental questions about kinesiology and gain broad understanding of the research methods used to answer these questions.

Students pursuing the Ph.D. will attain a significantly greater depth of knowledge in the chosen area of emphasis than would be encountered in the M.S. program.

Aims

The Graduate Program in Kinesiology at Pennsylvania State University strives to:

Recruit and mentor graduate students of the highest quality who will develop into outstanding scholars and researchers, with an emphasis on the training of doctoral students;
Create and disseminate new knowledge in our six areas of graduate study;
Provide excellent instruction at the graduate level, both in formal classroom settings and outside the classroom through mentoring in research.

General requirements

The minimum requirements for admission to the master's program include:

a 3.00 junior/senior grade-point average (on a 4.00 scale),
satisfactory recommendations,
and appropriate background courses in physical, biological, behavioral, and/or social science, depending on the intended area of specialization.

Applicants from majors other than exercise and sport science/physical education are welcome to apply.

In addition, doctoral applicants are expected to meet more stringent admission standards, including documented research capabilities (e.g., from an M.S. degree). Experience is highly desirable.
