Features
- Film and Media from University of California, Berkeley integrates the traditions of History, Law, Literature, Religion and Political Theory to the newer disciplines of Film Studies and Digital Media, applying the tools of Post-Structuralism, Psychoanalysis, New Historicism, Frankfurt School, Feminist Theory, Queer Theory, Post-Colonialism and Deconstruction. Many combine their degree study with a campus Designated Emphasis (graduate “minor”) in New Media, in Critical Theory, or in Women, Gender and Sexuality.

General requirements
- Submission of the online application including a Statement of Purpose and Personal Statement. Under “Faculty Contact,” list the faculty you have contacted concerning your application for admission to Berkeley. The department does not require or expect you to contact faculty prior to admission, however, under “Faculty Interest,” you are required to list the faculty whose research is of particular interest to you.
- A $135 application fee for U.S. citizens and permanent residents; $155 fee for all others.
- Three letters of recommendation submitted electronically.
- At least one writing sample of a maximum of 30 pages (this may be excerpted from a longer paper, but we suggest it not exceed 30 pages).
