In close consultation with faculty, the student will develop a specialization in one of three tracks:

  • Hispanic and Spanish American literature and culture,
  • Luso-Brazilian literature and culture,
  • Hispanic Linguistics (Spanish, Portuguese, and Catalan).

Each track will be organized around student areas of interest. Course preparation will lead to the Qualifying Examination, followed by the completion of a dissertation in the field.

Programme Structure


The following must be included within the 11-course requirement:

  • One Hispanic Linguistics seminar
  • One  seminar in Portuguese
  • One seminar outside of the historical period of major emphasis in a transatlantic field 
  • One  seminar in literary theory or containing a strong theoretical component
  • One course in Spanish and/or Portuguese language pedagogy


Coursework Requirements for Hispanic Linguistics Track include:

  • One  seminar in Hispanic Linguistics in the student’s primary linguistics sub-field
  • Two seminars in Hispanic Linguistics
  • One  seminar covering the linguistic structure of a language other than Spanish 
  • One  seminar in the Linguistics Department in the student’s primary linguistics sub-field
  • One course on quantitative methods for social sciences
  • Three additional courses in linguistics
  • One course in Spanish language pedagogy 
  • One graduate seminar in Hispanic Literature
  • One course related to field of interest, approved by adviser

English Language Requirements

    The TOEFL®PBT is administered in a paper format and measures your ability to use and understand English in a classroom setting at the college or university level. It accurately measures how well you can listen, read and write in English while performing academic tasks.

General Requirements

  •  B.A. degree with studies in Spanish, Spanish-American, Portuguese, or Luso -Brazilian literatures or Hispanic Linguistics; or another field with demonstrable bearing on Hispanic and/or Luso-Brazilian studies.
  • Native or near-native proficiency in either Spanish or Portuguese.
  • Three (3) Letters of Recommendation
  • Transcripts – All undergraduate and graduate work from each institution attended
  • GRE scores are not required for the Hispanic Languages & Literatures program
  • Writing samples should be in the form of thesis or research paper on a topic relevant to the fields of Romance and/or Hispanic languages and literature (about 15-20 pages. English, Spanish, and Portuguese are accepted)
