Overview
It is expected that students will come into the Audiology program at the University of California, San Diego from a variety of different science backgrounds, including speech, language, and hearing sciences, biological and physical sciences, engineering, psychology, nursing, or a pre-med curriculum.
Program Goals
- To provide graduate education culminating in a Doctor of Audiology (AuD) degree and to prepare students to meet the current professional standards for clinical certification and licensure.
- To utilize multidisciplinary faculty to provide an educational framework of patient-centered, culturally competent, interprofessional practice for the diagnosis and treatment of hearing and balance disorders.
- To provide students with a wide range of clinical experiences with culturally and linguistically diverse populations in a variety of settings.
- To provide integrative learning experiences that foster the development of clinical decision-making skills.
- To provide research experiences that will enable graduates to apply principles of evidence-based practice and to contribute to ongoing advances in the field.
- To provide academic and clinical experiences that will foster a life-long commitment to professional development.
Programme Structure
Learning Outcomes:
- Apply foundational knowledge about the anatomical and physiological basis of hearing and balance and apply knowledge about psychological and sociological bases of human communication.
- Apply theory and research to the diagnosis, management, and prevention of hearing, balance, and communication disorders.
- Demonstrate professional oral and written communication skills.
- Plan, implement, and modify clinical services across a wide range of populations including individuals from culturally- and linguistically-diverse groups.
- Acquire the professional knowledge and skills needed to be eligible for state licensure and professional certification in audiology.

General requirements
Applicants for admission to the program must meet the general requirements for admission to both universities, as outlined in the current catalogs of SDSU and UCSD.
Applicants must also meet the special requirements of this program. These currently include:
- Overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better in undergraduate courses and any graduate courses completed and good standing in the last institution attended. Please note that the average GPA of admitted students is typically much higher (3.7 to 3.8).
- NOTE: The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is not required. GRE scores will not be considered or reviewed.
