Education
The Media, Technology and Society program at Northwestern University encourages students to pursue their passion by designing individualized programs that incorporate relevant classes from across the University.
The program faculty is internationally renowned for their research in areas such as children’s development, digital media use and effects, health and well-being, human-computer interaction, innovation and change, media institutions, networks and organizing, and social media.
Our faculty actively pursues opportunities to make positive economic, cultural, and social impact through their research in businesses, nonprofit, and government agencies.
Programme Structure
- Examinations: upon completion of coursework, written and oral comprehensive examination
- Research/Projects: present a research paper or grant proposal by the end of the second year of coursework
- PhD Dissertation: based on original, independent research
- Final Evaluations: oral defense of dissertation

General requirements
- Admitted students must hold a U.S. bachelor’s degree — or an equivalent non-U.S. degree — from a regionally accredited institution.
- TGS will accept applications from international students with 3-year bachelor's degrees.
- You may be considered for admission before you finish your undergraduate degree, but you must complete that degree before you enroll at Northwestern.
In general, to apply to The Graduate School (TGS), you will be required to:
- Submit an application online.
- Pay an online application fee by credit card.
- Submit your Statement of Purpose.
- Upload your transcript or academic record.
- Submit your test scores (if required by your admitting program).
- Upload two to three Letters of Recommendation.
