Overview
Building on the strength of its core faculty, transregional concentrations allow students to bring two geographic fields offered in the department together using a distinct methodological or topical focus.
Features
- A Topical and Transregional Studies at New York University focus encourages students to explore the boundaries of and connections between historical geographies and to examine new approaches toward histories of empire, migration, global commerce, political and cultural formations, and other aspects of global history.
Programme Structure
Curriculum:
- The department also allows students to pursue studies that are primarily oriented around a specific topical approach to historical scholarship.
- Currently, the department’s core faculty has particular expertise in the study of the history of women and gender and in the study of the environment, technology, and health. Students applying with a topical focus in mind can expect to specialize in either of those approaches, with the ability to ground their studies in one of the department’s geographical fields.
- Specific course guidelines are flexible and are tailored to the needs and abilities of each student. To qualify as PhD candidates, students take exams in three fields tailored to their specific course of study and historical interests.
