Overview
The mission of the Toxicology program at University of Maryland Eastern Shore is to provide educational and professional training in mechanistic and applied fields of environmental and mammalian toxicology.
Features
- Students in the program conduct research to evaluate the harmful effects of chemical, physical, and biological agents on living organisms; investigate the mechanisms of toxicity and the prevention of chemically induced diseases; and provide data to support risk assessment and environmental protection.
Programme Structure
Curriculum:
- Careers in local, state, and federal agencies; industry; and public interest groups are supported. Master’s degrees can be earned by completing 24 credits of coursework, 6 credits of original thesis research, and successfully defending the master’s thesis.
- Those who anticipate further study can complete 30 credits of specified coursework, a disciplinary exam, and write a scholarly paper to complete a master’s degree.
- The Ph.D. requires 30 credits of coursework, satisfactory performance on comprehensive exams, and completion of at least 12 credits of doctoral research followed by the successful defense of the doctoral thesis.
- There are three areas of specialization from which the student may choose: chemical carcinogenesis, environmental toxicology, neurotoxicology, and molecular & mechanistic toxicology.

General requirements
- Those who have earned or will earn a bachelor’s or master’s degree at a regionally accredited college or university in the United States or the U.S. minimum credit hours equivalent of either degree from another country will be considered for admission to the Graduate School.
- The Graduate School requires as a minimum admission standard a” B ” cumulative grade point average, or 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, in a program of study resulting in a baccalaureate degree generally of a four year (eight semester, 120 minimum credit hours) duration and master’s degree generally of a two-year (four semester, 30 minimum credit hours) duration. Individual programs may establish additional admissions criteria, which exceed the Graduate School’s minimum requirements.
