University of Maryland Eastern Shore

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) is a land-grant, historically black college founded in 1886 as the Delaware Conference Academy. Since its beginning, the institution has had several name changes and governing bodies. It was Maryland State College from 1948 until 1970, when it became one of the five campuses that formed the University of Maryland.

About

History

The University of Maryland Eastern Shore opened its doors Sept. 13, 1886, when it was known initially as the Delaware Conference Academy under the auspices of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Greeting the nine students who showed up that Monday were two educators, Benjamin O. Bird and his wife, Portia Lovett Bird.

UMES is a student-centered, doctoral research degree-granting university known for its nationally accredited undergraduate and graduate programs, applied research, and highly valued graduates.

Student clubs

Wide variety of student organizations reflect a diversity of student interests. Co-curricular involvement through student organizations allows students to explore, broaden their interests, test and improve skills in leadership, interpersonal relations, organizational development, group dynamics, and budgeting.

Accreditation

UMES is approved by the state of Maryland and fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
