Key facts
The programme´s mail objectives are:
- To train new researchers and prepare teams that can successfully tackle the challenge that Food Science and Nutrition and their relationship with Health represent.
- To promote the training of new university teachers in the disciplines related to these sciences.
- To specialise those postgraduates who are interested in this broad and extremely important field of research for their professional, scientific and technical development development.
- To train doctors who can contribute to the development of new safe and healthy food products and promote an optimal nutrition for people at different stages of life.
Research
These qualifications enable PhD graduates from the Programme to join multidisciplinary research groups within the complex field of Nutrition, Food and Health, Nutrition Institutes both at the University and in R&D&I units of the Food Industry.
Accreditation
The doctoral program in Food, Physiology and Health of the University of Navarra obtained the Mention of Excellence (MEE2011-0136) according to the Resolution of 6 October 2011, of the General Secretariat of Universities (BOE of 20 October 2011). An overall weighted assessment of 97 points out of 100 can be found at report of the National Agency for Assessment of Quality and Accreditation .
Programme Structure
The programme combines activities directly related to the experimental part of a PhD:
- critical literature research,
- planning and development of experiments,
- statistical approach and
- critical evaluation and interpretation of data
with those oriented to the acquisition of other transversal skills
- research communication abilities,
- ethics in research,
- use and management or research databases typical of the area,
- publishing in scientific journals,
- attending conferences and seminars, etc.
The courses oriented to training transversal skills can be distributed along the four years programme, and are preferably taken during the first two years.
Those students who want to get the International PhD mention will have to comply with additional requirements, being a minimum 3 months stage in a non-Spanish university the most important one.
Lecturers
Most of our lecturers and researchers belong to the Centre for Nutrition Research of University of Navarra. Excellent H values for some of them (higher than 40) qualify them as reference researchers in their fields.

General requirements
The student selection criteria will be based on:
a) Academic record (average grade), which will account for 80% of the overall assessment.
b) Curriculum vitae, which will account for 10% of the overall assessment. The following will be assessed:
- The type of knowledge acquired by the candidate during their previous training stage.
- The completion of a research project in this period and its quality.
- The Final Degree Project if applicable.
- Knowledge of English.
- Other knowledge; computing, other languages, etc.
c) Letters of recommendation, which will account for 10% of the overall assessment. Two letters of recommendation from the academic or professional field will be required. Students with specific educational needs derived from the disability will have an academic advisor in the admission process who will evaluate the need for possible curricular adaptations, itineraries or alternative studies.
