Our PhD in Architecture by Design offers designers, architects, and researchers opportunities to develop design-led research and investigation in creative and art-led methods, tectonics, and design contexts. Research in architecture seeks to redefine both the role of the architect and established practices, within constantly changing social, cultural and environmental landscapes.
PhD in Architecture by Design encourages designers and creative practitioners to work with YSA's experienced academics, practitioners, and scholars, and to engage in creative investigations into various aspects of design, art, craft, and architecture and their contexts.
The research degree by design and creative practice project will equip candidates with unique design research skills to navigate challenging socio-cultural environments and develop inventive, novel approaches, methodologies, and applications that enhance our practice and design outcomes. General requirements

For a PhD in Architecture by Design, you need to hold a Master’s degree or a Professional Degree (M.Arch), with the equivalent of a distinction or very high merit, or equivalent professional and design experience in the architecture and built environment fields. You can have BSc or BA with extended research or equivalent practice or creative
design experience.
Supervisors interview prospective research students to ensure a good supervisory match and to help with funding applications, where relevant. Most interviews take place over Zoom. UK-based applicants may also be invited to campus.
